Jesus Blood Is Richest In The Dark

Along with 30 million other people across North America, my family gathered to watch the total solar eclipse. We enjoyed the day together with friends by grilling burgers and playing yard games. Lori had shared an article with me about wearing red and green during the eclipse. The rods and cones in our eyes process the twilight differently in a phenomenon knowns as the Purkinje Effect. Basically, we see a contrast in colors in a matter of seconds as opposed to the normal 30-45 minute transition between light and dark.

The whole event was a majestic experience.  We were in awe of the beauty of it all. The sun, the moon, the solar prominence, the temperature changes, the feel and look of sunset surrounding us 360 degrees, and the stars that came out in midday were all so beautiful to behold. We also couldn’t have asked for better weather in North Central Arkansas. Many of the 30 Million people who witnessed the totality first hand no doubt had a spiritual experience with the feeling of a greater Glory. I saw a clip with one news reporter taking his glasses off in tears at the experience.

As the Purikine Effect explains, the cones and rods of our eyes process colors differently in different light. Green colors brighten with less light and reds darken.  In the midst of it all and during this Easter season, I couldn’t help but have the thought on my mind of the sun going dark during Jesus’ death on the cross. I wasn’t in consistent contemplation, but nonetheless his crucifixion was continually on my mind.

During those few moments as the eclipse moved into totality, the red t-shirt I was wearing quickly became the richest color of red I have ever seen. Its appearance went from bright candy apple red to a deep blood red in a matter of seconds. The green of our yard which spills over into a pasture had a brightness that I could only explain as that glow only witnessed elsewhere in an expectant mother.  In those few short moments, I was captivated with the thought that Jesus blood is richest in our darkest moments, and the earth truly is suffering the pains of childbirth waiting expectantly on the revealing of the fully mature sons and daughters of God.

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
— John 1:5 NASB1995

The eclipse has come and gone along with the influx of people who traveled from all over the world to experience this beautiful event. One thing remains … God’s love and life giving sacrifice of Jesus’ blood. I want to encourage you (and myself) to look to Jesus’ blood when the darkest moments of life are upon you. Like the solar eclipse there are seasons when they’ll appear and they’ll come from different angels, but the truth of Jesus being the Light that darkness cannot comprehend will always be there.  We must simply remember to turn the eyes of our heart to Jesus.

For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.
— Romans 8:22 NASB

At Revealed Image Ministries, we partner with Jesus to bring His Light into dark places. If you are finding yourself in an eclipse of life and desperately need the deep red that covers your pain, we would love to sit in that pain with you during a session of healing prayer.  Jesus shows up ever single time. He brings Light into darkness and rewrites our story to the story of truth. We must simply turn our eyes to Him.

For the eagerly awaiting creation waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God.
— Romans 8:19 NASB
